Alone at Sea

Lightening lit up the sky and reflected off the mirror calm ocean; small ripples began rolling across its surface, as debris fell from the burning cargo ship. Pele and James perched on opposite ends of the escape boat, the oars drifting off into the distance.

They glared at each other as they heard distant screams and banging coming from the ship; thunder erupted drowning out the pleas. Pele picked up the water bottle by his side and emptied it over the side of the boat.

There was a loud crack of metal as the cargo ship split and sunk; the debris sucked with it as the ripples subsided. James took a box of matches out of his pocket and one by one, lit them and threw them overboard.

Above them, an albatross flapped its wings.
